A three bay bring your own drive NAS system sold by Thecus, the M3800 is largely billed as a multimedia center, intended specifically for home use in storing media rather than corporate, small office, or home office data. As such it has a number of features a lot of NAS products out there today lack, especially media out ports. The M3800 HDMI, component and AV out connections, allowing the device to be linked up directly to a home theater to display media. It even plays HD up to 1080P, allowing full use of the most modern high-definition televisions.

Whether or not they are intended as media devices, most NAS hardware include significant RAID support, and the M3800 is no exception. In this case, RAID 0, 1, 5, and JBOD are all supported right out of the box, giving a variety of potential methods to protect your media from hardware failure on the part of one of the drives. Hot-swapping is also supported, so the drives can be replaced quickly and easily in case of either hardware failure or if the user is interested in upgrading their storage capacity by replacing smaller hard drives with higher capacity models.
When it comes to data management, the M3800 performs quite admirably. Independent testing puts the device's reading speed in the mid 50's MB/s range, while writing speeds hovered around the low 40's range.
