Synology DS409+

    One of the latest of Synology's NAS products, the DS409 is a four bay, bring your own drive system, powered by a 1.06 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, and 4 MB Flash.  As with other Synology products tagged with a + in the product name, the DS409+ is intended largely for small or medium business use.  It would also serve admirably for a home office or personal use, though it would perhaps be a bit overpowered for either setting.  A scaled down version, the DS409, is also available, largely the same model with a slightly slower processor and less RAM.

    As with all recent Synology products, the DS409+ comes with their Disk Station Manager 2.1,  a fully integrated set of software designed to perform many of the tasks expected in a NAS and at the same time allow easy insertion of the more popular third party software available.

    RAID isn't neglected in the DS409+, as the NAS supports RAID 0/1/5/6, and 5+Spare.  RAID expansion is also supported, allowing additional storage space to be added to the array without taking the entire unit offline for maintenance.

    In terms of performance, the DS409+ is no slouch.  Independent testing puts the device's average reading speed at somewhere in the high 50's MB/s, while writing speeds hovered in the mid 40's.  Both were tested using a gigabit transfer connection.
