Synology DS209+

A two drive bring your own drive system, the DS209+ is one of the latest NAS arrays available from Synology.  As with the other arrays from Synology's + line, the DS209+ is intended largely for office or corporate use, and is appropriately powered by a 1.06 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM.

As with most other NAS arrays, the DS209+ offers RAID support.  Considering that only two drives are included, RAID options are necessarily limited to RAID 0 and 1, though RAID expansion is also offered as an additional option.  Unfortunately, hotswapping isn't supproted, so the array needs to go down to replace a bad drive or enlarge capacity.

Like most Synology products, the DS209+ offers a quick USB copy button, which serves to copy an external drive onto the NAS for backup purposes.

Also as with other Synology products, the DS209+ comes with Synology's Disk Station Manager 2.1, including a wide variety of common applications such as Bit Torrent, HTTP, FTP, UPnP AV Media, iTunes, and USB printer servers, just to name a few.

Power consumption and noise are both also worth mentioning in this case.  Unlike many NAS options, the 209+ is both frugal with power and nearly silent, even with three fans installed.  It could easily be placed in a home environment without completely disrupting a quiet room, while even with two drives installed power utilization never ran much higher than the mid 30 Watts range, down to high teens when hibernation started.
