Synology DS109

    Powered by a 1.2 GHz processor and 128 MB of RAM, the Synology DS109 is the latest in Synology's series of powerful workgroup or home use bring your own drive NAS bays.  Intended to only store one harddrive, the DS109 is intended for workgroups or home use where storage size isn't the primary concern, but rather ease of use and the wide variety of services Synology customarily includes with their NASes.

    The DS109 also comes in two additional models with basically the same package of accessories but differing CPU speeds and RAM included.  The DS109+, intended for office or corporate data use, cuts down slightly on processing speed to 1.06 GHz, but increases RAM significantly to 512 MB, while the DS109j was designed specifically for home use and only makes use of a 266 MHz CPU and 32 MB RAM.

    As with all single bay models, the DS109 isn't intended for RAID use, but it does serve quite well as a data hub for a shared group of computers or personal use.  That said, it does have some backup options, since independent testing puts its transfer speeds at up to the mid 60's in MB/s.  This allows data to either be stored to or from the NAS quickly, allowing easy backups to be created quickly and efficiently to a seperate piece of hardware at periodic intervals.
