A full five bay system, the QNAP TS-509 was designed with small business and corporate networking needs in mind, and it reflects this design choice in its strong performance.
The TS-509 is a five bay, bring your own hard drives model, powered by a 1.6 GHz CPU and a full 1 GB of RAM. As with most QNAP devices specifically intended for small business and corporate needs, the TS-509 comes with iSCSI target server functionality included.

As with any NAS array of this size, RAID is one of the primary features desired by most administrators. The TS-509 doesn't disappoint, offering support for many RAID configurations including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 5+Spare, and JBOD arrangements. Hot-swap capability also ensures that data remains available even if one drive goes bad, allowing the user to replace the offending drive without taking down the entire NAS for maintenance.
Like many of QNAPs other devices, the TS-509 comes with a number of features already built in, but additional third-party software such as WordPress and Joomla can also be easily added through QNAP's QPGK software platform.
The TS-509 is a powerful machine capable of quick transfers - real world testing indicates that transfer speeds can reach up to about 80 MB/s under good conditions.
