QNAP TS-409

    The highest end NAS offered by QNAP specifically intended for SOHO and home use, the QNAP TS-409 is a 4 bay bring your own drive device intended to reach a capacity of up to two terabytes.  Powered by a 500 MHz processer and 256 MB RAM, the TS-409 is more than capable of handling even a heavy SOHO or home office load.

    One of the biggest draws for multiple drive NAS devices is RAID capacity, and the TS-409 doesn't disapoint in this role.  It supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 5+spare, and 6, allowing the user to select whichever best suits their personal needs.  Even better, it has hot-swap capability, meaning that the device doesn't even need to be offline in order to swap out a bad hard drive or increase the number of drives installed in the NAS.

    RAID isn't the only backup method available to the TS-409, either - it has a designated 2.0 USB port rigged with a "one touch copy" button, allowing either one of the NAS drives to be backed up or an external drive to be copied to the NAS, depending on the user configuration.

    As with all QNAP devices, the TS-409 comes with a variety of useful features that allow it to serve as a media server, as well as a package manager that allows easy addition of third party software such as MLDonkey and WordPress.

    Independent tests consistently put the TS-409 in the 20 MB/s range when using a gigabit Ethernet performance, a good showing for a device intended mostly for SOHO and home use.
