QNAP TS-109 II NAS
The QNAP TS-109 II Series NAS is a step down from the TS-119 - it is powered by a Marvell 500MHZ CPU and has 256 MB of RAM versus the 1.2 MHZ CPU and 512 MB of RAM of its bigger brother the TS-119. Even so, this is a speedy one drive NAS (you bring your own unless you buy it from a system integrator who installs and test the hard drive for you).
It has just about all the features of the other QNAP NAS devices, except that it does not act as an iSCSI target device (most home users won't need iSCSI).
Be sure when shopping to get the TS-109 II (the earlier model without the "II" may still be available but is somewhat slower and less capable - but the earlier model is available at bargain prices now if you are on a strict budget).

Using only less than 15 Watts of power when in operation (less than 7 watts when in sleep mode) on, this NAS has excellent energy savings built in. And, with its bittorrent client built-in, it can allow you to leave your PC off when uploading/downloading files and serving media to all your other devices.
Despite its small size, the TS-109 II has backup features that rival full size servers. With its "Q-RAID 1" advanced backup, the TS-109 II unit can back itself up to an external USB or eSATA drive. This backup is a full sync which allows the user to restore the NAS to full functionality if the internal drive should fail just be installing the external drive inside the NAS.
The TS-109 II is another of QNAP's fanless designs - the hard drive stays cool, yet the performance of the NAS is nearly silent - you can only hear the hard drive, not the NAS.
Like all QNAP NAS devices, the TS-109 has support for QNAS' package manager (QPKG) which allows easy installation of third party software such as Squeezecenter to serve your music, Wordpress and much more. The TS-109 II is speedy for its class of NAS - independent tests put its large file read performance in the 30 MBs on a gigabit network.
