NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+
Though no longer the flagship NAS product from NETGEAR after the relatively recent release of the ReadyNAS NVX, the older ReadyNAS NV+ model is still an alternative more cost-conscious NAS purchasers might consider looking into. A four bay, bring your own drives system, the NV+ is powered by 256 MB RAM, 64 MB Flash, and an Infrant IT3107 network storage processor.
One of the beautiful things about a newer "legacy" hardware like the NV+ is that savvy consumers can usually find a good deal if they're willing to spend some time looking. Straight off the shelf, the NV+ is certainly a good NAS for home users, but for a very reasonable price difference better options can often be found on sites like ebay, where upgraded hardware often sells for about the same figure you'd expect to find the core product by itself. This can be a great way to pick up an excellent piece of hardware for a discount price.

Like most NAS solutions offered by NETGEAR, the ReadyNAS is only intended to support the more popular RAID alternatives, namely RAID 0, 1, 5, and JBOD configurations. Of course, when properly configured the drives are hot-swappable, meaning that upgrades or replacements can be installed without taking the entire array offline for maintenance.
For an older model, the ReadyNAS NV+ does surprisingly well in speed testing, scoring mid 10's in MB/s during a throughput testing on a gigabit internet connection - not blazing speed, but certainly fast enough for just about any personal home use as well as lower end home office workloads.
