This is one I hadn't heard of before - the Akitio Cloud Hybrid NAS. The Akitio Cloud Hybrid NAS is a single drive NAS enclosure with some pretty intriguing features, including USB 3.0 direct connection alternative to the also included gigabit ethernet port. In other words, you can use this device either as a NAS connected to your network (LAN) or as direct storage to your computer. This sort of flexibility is quite unusual.
Over at GeekNewsCentral.Com, there is a short review of this NAS/Direct Storage Box. The reviewer found this NAS server unusually easy to set up:
I installed a 2TB drive in the unit, plugged it into my network, and then within minutes logged into the device and started configuring it. It literally took me longer to plug a network cable into it, and hook up the power cord then it did to set the device up. When they say 45 second setup they are not kidding. If you have it sitting close to your computer you can also connect to it via a USB 3.0 connection. Making it a Network Attached Storage / Direct Attached storage.
Although I hadn't heard of Akitio as a NAS device maker, apparently they have a number of external storage devices and media players, including a number of devices with Thunderbolt interfaces included.
The Akitio Cloud Hybrid NAS/DAS is quite inexpensive for a dual function device - Amazon has it, for example, for around $100.
